Allende Gossens, Salvador
- Allende Gossens, Salvador
(1908–1973)
Marxist president of Chile from 1970 to1973 and founder of the Chilean Socialist Party, he died in the course of a United States Central Intelligence Agency-backed coup against his government. He was born in Santiago and before his full time involvement in politics he trained (at the University of Chile) and worked as a doctor. In 1937 he was elected to the Chilean congress, served as minister of health from 1939 to 1942, and from 1945 until 1970 served in the Chilean senate. He was the presidential candidate for a leftist coalition in the 1952, 1958 and 1964 elections before his successful bid in 1970. His government put into effect various socialist measures, such as nationalization of major industries and land reform, but it could not be described as Marxist, despite Allende’s own Marxist sympathies.
